Money = power and influence. It’s sad but true.
Fossil fuel companies are the wealthiest and most powerful companies on the planet. They’re continuing to use their money, power and influence to block every serious attempt to tackle climate change.
In October 2019, The Guardian revealed the top twenty fossil fuel companies who, collectively, have been responsible for 35% of all global greenhouse gas emissions since 1965, a date when the probable impact of fossil fuels was known by industry leaders and politicians. Some of these are investor-owned companies, others are state-owned. For decades, they have thrown their money, power and influence into climate denial campaigns and pseudo-science. They’ve influenced the media, bought politicians and seriously delayed any progress on climate change. They will continue to do this unless we stop them.
We can do this is two ways:
- By divesting from fossil fuels on a personal level.
- By convincing our public and private institutions to divest and publicly break their ties with fossil fuel companies.
